2013: Lessons

2013 has taught me…

  • If you want to write all you need is a pen, some paper and some time
  • Vulnerability is priceless and pretty damn difficult to come by. Most people won’t/don’t/can’t let down their guard long enough to actually let someone past the drawbridge. 2013 gave me the privilege of doing that twice over
  • Technology is only a tool - which means it's both a blessing and a curse
  • Sometimes things are better off left unsaid
  • We are not solely made up of where or who we come from. We are an amalgamation of those things and much, much more
  • Eyes are the window to the soul
  • Brushing my teeth with tap water is a luxury I will no longer take for granted
  • It never hurts to ask, especially when you are afraid
  • I have the most incredible friends and family
  • The Bay Area is exactly where I belong, even though I sometimes miss the mountains
  • There is much to be said for sitting, listening and just breathing
  • The loves of my life include (but are not limited to)… burgundy ink, Moleskine notebooks, movies (actually documentaries), David’s Tea in the morning, pulled pork sandwiches from Ted’s Deli, homemade Muesli, books… and more books, M & D, B & E, and A, tech and the unplugging of said tech, freedom, creation, kick-ass networks, flowers and sunsets that take your breath away, and opportunities… lots of them!
  • That we are all a lot more capable than we like to think we are
  • Heartfelt peace is always the goal. Always

india as contradiction

India is a land of contradictions. Religious and yet so little peace to be found. Headed toward Mars and still burning cow dung for cooking fuel. Such beauty and such chaos in one place.

For the last week I’ve pondered one sole question - how do I explain this place? The place where Eastern religion meets Western consumption. Where art honors the Gods and Goddesses and offers no form of protest or depiction of the average life. Where World Heritage mixes freely with acres of waste and pollution. The land of Namaste, where curry, cumin and coriander are served three meals a day and everyone knows what Coca Cola is.

Where social indifference reigns supreme. Where beating the rules is expected and kickbacks are traditional. Where cast is outlawed, but still seems to judge people each and every day. Where living out of doors and cooking with an open fire is the rule, rather than the exception. Where the history of conquests and emperors is honored as highly as Temples to the Gods.

How does one place hold such contradictions so close?

where's the creativity?

Is there any creativity left in the world?

I’m not talking about making sh!t up. I’m not talking about faking it until you make it. I’m talking about shear unadulterated creativity. Where has it gone?

Creativity - the interwebs are chock full of people writing top ten lists, innovation hacks and how-to guides… but here’s the truth - Creativity is difficult. Really difficult. No matter where you work or what you do. Here’s the thing, if creative solutions were easier, it wouldn’t be innovative. It’s not supposed to be simple.

Difficulty not withstanding, where are the creative problem solvers?

Using the established form, project template or following the age-old (usually un-inspected) rule is not creative, not in the least.
